To understand what IT support is about we’d have to start from a much simpler point, which is — What is Information Technology?
Information Technology (I.T) is the use of digital technologies like computers and the internet to store and process data into useful information.
Information technology has transformed our lives in ways we may not even have realized. It enables transferring information to different people or places at high speeds and the fact that computers are intertwined into our day-to-day activities is very much indisputable. Computers power many things from our phones, street lights, smart home devices, even medical equipment, and rocket science.
In simple terms, IT is the use of information to store, retrieve, transmit, and manipulate data or information.
IT industry entails a large scope of jobs involving computer technologies from setup, repair & maintenance, to customer support, up to the network engineers who keep our computers connected. But at the end of the day, IT is about people and end-users. Solving meaningful problems using technology is the reason why computers are found in almost every sector like education, health, and even entertainment.
So What does an IT support specialist do?
The day-to-day work of someone in the IT support can vary depending on the company or the nature of your work. But in general, the IT support guy makes sure the companies technological equipment are running smoothly. Typically this involves managing, installing, troubleshooting, and configuring office equipment. Communicating with end-users, setting up networks, and setting up security against wizards of the digital dark art (hackers) are also in his forte.
As an IT support personnel, sometimes things would go wrong, and when you fail at something in IT, you should take the feedback from those mistakes to better equip yourself to tackle them the next time.
